The Struggles of Recruiting in the Military

When you're getting commissioned in 1979, what's the outlook on the military? The army back then had tiered readiness. Most of the NCOs that I had were alcoholics and it's all volunteer force just started. We had a rifle company with three platoon authorized, but only men for two platoons. It was pretty bad until President Reagan came in and really, you know, resourced us.
