It's harder now to do this than it was a decade ago. If you can get people to anticipate something that they really, really want, then they'll start sharing it with other people. One of the things with Presell that I learned early on is that people don't want to pre-order a book. Unless they're my friends, they're just going to wait till the book comes out. The phases are to incentivize people to order early because there's really no benefit for them except for the fact that if I give them bonuses, then it is an incentive.
