How to Stop the Bad Publicity From Overwhelming the Church
In 1968, when all of this started, at about the same time that Benson is trying to be on a presidential ticket with a segregationist, the brother decided that they don't want to talk about their racial teachings in public. Anything we say about the black or Negroes, as they said in those days, should be clear, positive, and brief. And so that becomes their mantra. That meeting in February of 1970 is crucial because it's where the seeds for the church's public relations department is born. It really gets started because of the because of race, because of the criticisms on race.
