Reform and Opening in China
Protesters are angry that reform and opening isn't going fast enough in China. But they're also involved in what's known as new authoritarianism, which is the ideology of a strong central party taking full control of society. They kind of want democracy, but mostly what they want is to be in charge of the party so they can crush bureaucracy holding market reforms back. The guy they're trying to defend winds up getting ousted and put under house arrest for life.
