In 1991 he sees racism as proof of a lack of ideological rigidity in his first writings about it. And so he sees it as proof of instead is the fact that racism can be grafted onto the existing ideology of populism. It's just like a totally separate thing, which to me is a pretty unsatisfying way of going about it. The idea that he was a hair and folk socialist mostly associated with white people really strikes me as strange because one of the things he tries to do are take soft Christian popular socialism and Martin Luther King. He recast it as a viable populism that understands human limitations and the tragic nature of human life.
