In 1952, the American Psychiatric Association published the first diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders. In order to get a health insurance company to pay for therapy or medication, you need to have a clear-cut diagnosis that can be easily coded for medical billing. The ambiguous, complex, and highly individualized diagnosis of psychoanalysis just would not work in that system.
