The Book of the Dead
Ancient Egyptians believed that when an individual died, his heart was weighed by the gods. The belief in divine judgment after death has become rather popular today. Most of the Mediterranean and ancient Near East did not believe in posthumous salvation until the 5th century BCE or so.
