Mitral Valve Disease
Rheumatic heart disease involving cardiac valves results from molecular mimicry between on the strep side, group A strep M protein and glucosamine. On the human side, antigens that are present on heart valves, specifically laminin and glycoproteins. Rheumatic mitral valve is most often affected by increased trans-vobular pressure gradients across the valve which may be due to higher shear stress.
