The Tension Between Rationalism and Pluralism
The freedom of association is an individual right. It's a way of building rights of groups out of the rights of individuals to come together and do things together. The rationalist tradition would look at a church and worry about the authority and the power that a priest might hold over parishioners, or that the religious tradition as such holds over say women and children within the tradition.
