Adaptive Functional Symptoms
A child doesn't like believing it's my fault. I'm unlovable. People use conventional notions to make sense of their symptoms and think they are bad, sick, stupid, or crazy. The suffering that comes without the symptom is subjectively worse. That's why the symptom exists. It's the emotional mind's choice of the lesser suffering. But there's no conscious recognition of that whatsoever.
