The Legend of Marathon
Marathon became a source of national pride for the Athenians. Their victory endowed the Greeks with the faith in their destiny that was to endure for three centuries, during which Western culture would be born. A later legend relates that one hoplite brought his dog to the Athenian encampment and so when the fighting started, it attacked the Persians at his master's side. The incident of the heroic death of Kynogaris became an emblem of cultural memory in ancient Greece.
