For an object to take on the status of a commodity, it must be created with the intent of its having or containing some exchange value. So in the case of the shovel for three coats, i am not saying or giving some one a shovel based on its qualities. I am trading with some one what i see to be an equivalent between the shovel and the three coats. That means i have exabstracted from the shovel itself as a use value, as its qualities, and embraced only its exchange value,.
