Self-esteem isn't helpful and we shouldn't really be trying to promote it so that was basically where I ended. There's a part of your brain that lights up or is active when you're thinking about yourself or the self but there are psychological findings which build on this too. Being interested in something is strongly related to identity and that's a whole fascinating thing to go down and think about as well. The Cambridge handbook of motivation and learning is a good resource for those who like dense academic text.
