The Repurposed Mental Health Facilities of the US
By 18th by 1880, 139 mental asylum's had been built in the US. They were big grand places, sort of like museums and universities,. Some became fixtures on the tourist trail. Others also became prisons. The idea was obviously controlling anti-social behavior because you can potentially be more volatile. It wasn't until 1829 with a man named William Scrivenger that authorities abolished all physical restraints and implement a non restraint system.
