Wozencraft's Treaty With the Yokouts
By 1851, most Native Americans in California were actively negotiating treaties. The Potoyenci chief named Bautista led the negotiations with Wozencraft, McKee and Barber for land near the Merced River. Without government protection, Bautista feared his people could be wiped out because he led a raid against James Savage's trading post. By 1851, the easy gold was drying up in the mines and most miners made less than $8 a day.
