Congress chartered the freedman's bank in 18 65 after the civil war. Tens of thousands of formerly enslaved people deposited their money there. But those in charge of the bank were white. The bank collapsed, depositors lost all their savings. terry says this is just one early example of how financial institutions have failed or mistreated or discriminated against black consumers.
