Robin Hanson is best known in these circles as the gentleman who gave us the term Great Filters. These describe the various hurdles that life has to pass through to get from dead young planets to building rockets. Brandon Carter, an astrophysicist best known on this show for his discussion on the anthropic principle and doomsday argument, had discussed this in the 1980s but had borrowed the term HARD STEPPS from the medical field. I'm also not terribly fond of the term GRABY ALIENS, as to me at least that puts a negative connotation on the entire concept of space colonization.
