I was not mature enough to be a good father. I got better as they got older and I'm much better as a grandfather. Most of my decisions were made for me. And also I had a very free life. Do you think it's harder growing up now than it was after the war? Much harder. They're having to make impossible decisions all the time. My wife Claire says that you've got six selves. You've got the boy of ten writing for the child inside himself, the soldier, the teacher, the entrepreneur, the performer and the campaigner. Which is the most important to your wife, I think.
