Dr. Exline: I like to think about supernatural beliefs as being sort of an accelerant. They make your love or hatred of another person stronger by providing this connection to an authority beyond this world. We are looking at the question of whether psychedelics might trigger spiritual struggles or help to resolve spiritual struggles in some people. And we're also really interested in these questions about political polarization and how supernatural beliefs could either make people more or less polarized depending on their content.
