John Proctor had 17 children by three different wives. He owned many properties and was one of the town's wealthiest residents. From the start, he did not agree with the witch hunt and was very vocal about his opinion. The biggest reason that the religious hysteria dictated their names is that they were unable to successfully clear their names as soon as they were accused.
