The idea that we have of a career, it's very abstract. We rely on models of desire to help us choose between the billions. Gerard says we have the romantic myth that our desires are entirely our own. In fact, desire is social, and desires work by contagion. People conflate a belief they have with an object which probably wast not original with them.
In this episode of Infinite Loops we spoke with Luke Burgis, author of the book 'Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life'. We talk about:
- Needs vs. Desire
- The current state of social media
- 'Celebristan' and 'Freshmanistan'
- How to identify fake "experts"
- Scapegoating and Mimetic Violence
- And a LOT more!
