The Sundy Tradition

The sunnesr were perfectly comfortable with autocracy because they said, well, order is more important than sort of justice, as it were. But the public sphere wasn't really in the control of these autocrats. As long as rule of law existed, a the olama were really in control. The move to ratify a usurper’s authority is actually a brilliant manoeuvre in preserving the authority of the sharia and the olama over any claims made by whoever happens to be in power.
