I think one of the hallmarks of traditional societies is they recognize human weakness and try to help people overcome it. And that gets to the heart of the, you know, Lewis Munford's remark that our entire economy now is driven on the seven deadly sins. I found an old Catholic grade school textbook from 1952 in one of my cousins' long abandoned bedrooms. The section on economics was all about how in the middle ages there was a just price and it was looked down upon for people to spend money on themselves.
