The One-Seed Theory and the Problem of Maternal Resemblance
Aristotle is a strong component of the one-seed theory, and all of the neoplatonists just follow Aristotle. Porphyry says that there's no female seed, but the seed reverts, and as it works, is actualized by the mother's soul. This is what's going to account for the maternal resemblance. And he has another piece of evidence on his side, which we wouldn't really regard as a piece of evidence today. There's this phenomenon that's often called idioplasty. Have you heard of this?
