Often, often those narratives appeal to what in other contexts are just obvious epistemic virtues. I mean it's sort of parasitic on a pretty attractive conception of what good critical, sincere, scrutinizing autonomous citizens should be doing, and somehow subverts it, right? It gets a lot of its charge precisely from that sort of claim.
