I do wonder if this move towards psychologizing a villain is somewhat of a Christian impulse. I think that what we've lost in like our contemporary critical culture is being able to understand sin as an illness or evil as an illness that afflicts the person who commits it and also have a sense of justice. That's the danger of our current kind of cultural hermeneutic, you might say. But not don't resolve them by just erasing one of them. Right?
