When we say kicking ass in that way, it's one thing. But when we say like have a kick ass day, it means like everything's going right and things are awesome. So for example, imagine, I don't know, you go to a concert and then you see a band that is playing really well live. You can say, wow, these guys are kickingass on stage or you could use it in any other situation.
