From the 1960s and 70s on it becomes the party of small government. It takes a stand against the central government using its powers to force that integration. Grover Norquist head of an organization called Americans for taxpayer reform says I want to shrink the federal government to the point where we can drown it in a bathtub. That becomes the mission of the Republican Party.
