The Importance of a Prologue
It's useful if you're setting something in the real world where the protagonist doesn't know about the secret world. I think that if your prologue is there to help establish the feel of epicness or whatever, then it's probably required. Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring Movie treads that line very carefully. James Bond always actually opens the prologue. An action sequence because they know they're not going to necessarily be able to do the action sequence right off.
