Introduction

The town awoke to the sounds of the friars and their companions, a few bodyguards carrying swords. A foul, diabolic spirit had crept in among the good Christians of the town. The Dominicans said they would hear anyone who wanted to rid themselves of their heirs. But after those three days, the Inquisition would begin. Any obdurate heretics would be handed over to the secular authorities for punishment.
