In his book, McCaskill presents long-termism as an extension of the civil rights movement. He argues that there is no intrinsic difference between an individual who dies and a possible person who is not born. On this view, people are understood to be containers of value. One way to do that is to create new people with net positive amounts of value.

Paris Marx is joined by Émile P. Torres to discuss the ongoing effort to sell effective altruism and longtermism to the public, and why they’re philosophies that won’t solve the real problems we face.
