Is It More Likely That the Male Shepherds Were Overseen the Production and the the Shepherding of the Sheep?

In the christmas story, it's absolutely believable, maybe even plausible. But it's male shepherds. Do we make too much out of that? They're probably not like, you know, like we literaly have a shepherd with a hurt leg and kind of outcast.
