The Quakers and the Anti-Slavery Movement

The Quakers were the only religious denomination in Britain who took a principal stand against slavery. They had been quite ineffective for many years because people thought of them as an outroop. The first meeting of the anti-slavery committee in 1787 was nine Quakers and three Anglicans. And they agreed to elect an Anglican chair of the group so that when the letters went out, they would have familiar names on them.
