Carrie's father shot back in defense of her when a man pointed a gun at him. Carrie was 11 years old and had to stay home from school during his divorce. Her mother hired a uniform police officer, Daryl Prater, who took her every day for the rest of that year. Carrie went on to graduate with five full scholarships; she is now attending University of California Berkeley.
