Mendelsohn wasn't a fan o folk music, and by extension, most people have tried then to dismiss the folk influence of the second movement of the symphony. While mendelssohn actually reverses the rhythm of the scotch snap, the harmonies in the movement are absolutely derived from folk music. Yet another connection with scotland that mendelsohn might have disavowed, but was clearly influenced by. This is an extremely difficult movement for orchestras to play. It requires a ton of dexterity just to play all the notes, let alone play them with lightness, grace and joy.
