After the Romans withdrew from britain, there was some retreat away from christianity. But a significant church persisted on into the fifth and sixth centuries. The major leader of this new irish missionism was saint columba who reportedly led a team of 12 monks across the sea to iona in 563. He founded an abbey there which he then used as the great headquarters for the spread and promotion of christianity in britain.
