The Assyrian king Shalmanes of the Third created a handsome two-metre high, black limestone obelisk to record his last campaign in the Levant and it is not flattering. With no Assyrians to trouble him, the Aramayan king Hazael moved quickly to cau his puny neighbours. He conquered much of Israel east of the Jordan.
