The gospels are littered with demoniacs, especially considering how small the population of the area was at the time. When you study biblical history is that it tends to go in waves. There are certain periods that are very central and important to God's plan. And they tend to have a lot of supernatural activity happening. But we shouldn't expect to use the gospels as a model for what happens everywhere in all ages.
