The Emotion Behind the Song

I feel like in some ways the work's almost like, it's like therapy. I'll give you an example from pretty recently. I was getting the artist with a studio who was writing words for a song. The emotion behind the story was much stronger than the lyrics in the song. So what I suggested as a homework assignment was to go home that night and not try to write the words, but to write the emotion,. Just write pages, write an essay about how you feel about this... And then look through those eight pages and just kind of underline where the most interesting or charged material is. It could be anything.
