Lord Nelson's Funeral
The great admiral would be laid to rest in the crypt of St. Paul's Cathedral, a privilege that had never before been extended to someone outside the royal family. The government spent just over 1.2 million pounds, or 1.5 million dollars, on Nelson's funeral. Temporary stadium seating was built inside the cathedral with enough room for seven thousand men; no women were invited to the ceremony. According to some historians, at the time, this was the largest public event in the history of London.
