To rordy, we don't need that sort of ultimate foundation to be able to make a case for liberalism. Society is just far better off when it can base public policy on the rational consensus of individual citizens. Almost always these philosophical ideas that you might structure your society around were created in an entirely different culture and emerged out of an entirely different history.
