The Hono-Ji Incident in 1582

By the 1580s, Nobunaga controls over 20 Japanese provinces. He rules from where today you'll find Fukuoka to Niigata. His final goal was nothing less than the unification of all Japan. The Hono-ji incident in 1582 saw him lose control of Ishigo Province. A traitor led an army into Kyoto and attacked a tea ceremony held by Nobunaga. As his bodyguards fought Matsuhide's army he committed suicide rather than be captured or killed. Mitsuhide never recovered Nobunaga's body but they eventually dispatched Nobunaga’s bodyguards for their capture.
