The Trial, the Kidnapping of William Morgan
David C. Miller, William Morgan's business partner and publisher, was seized by 50 men armed with clubs in 1826. He was held for several days until Masons catch him and Ganson obtain the missing manuscripts. Mrs. Morgan had to make the return journey by herself and the coach unprotected a two day journey which would have been punishment of its own. Such a series of outrages in which the fraternity seemed degraded into a lawless mob could not fail to alarm and arouse the people. In most of the towns and counties near the scene of action, addresses voted in committees of investigation appointed whom the meetings pledged themselves to protect from illegal violence. These inquiries have presented the public with
