stephen cotkin is a professor of history at Princeton. He has written numerous essays for foreign affairs over the last few years, even those published long before russia's invasion of ukraine. His most recent piece s in our ma june issue was called, the cold war never ended. i wanted to start by reading a couple of lines from an earlier essay, one you wrote in 20 16 called russian's perpetual geo politics.
