Instead of sounding words out letter by letter, you're trying to figure out the whole word. Students could guess words if they were reading a simple book. But as books got more complicated and had fewer pictures, kids who had been reading okay before suddenly couldn't figure things out. Emily says once she realized this, it started making sense why so many kids were having a tough time.
