There's so much kitsch and self-awareness and cliche now accrued around the mythology of the west you almost can't tell what is serious and what's a joke. I think in some ways you can see a sort of questioning or revisiting of the old west with a sense of irony, cynical view of the west as totally unromantic right but as purely anarchic and amoral.
