The Grand Mosque of Jene in Mali
The city of Jene in southern Mali is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its 200 mud homes and central mud built mosque. Nabil says Timbuktu was an important cultural and academic hub of the 13th century with its impressive university and library also a mud built structure that is still standing today. The walls of Jene's great mosque are reconstructed with mud each April in an epic one day event called the crepey size or plastering. This immense undertaking ensures that the mosque will survive the rainy season despite altering in shape ever so slightly each year.
