There's a great paper by dan liverman and denis bramble looking at the changes, the anatomical changes, that occurred as we went from walking to running. And what they found is that things like the longitudinal arch, the medeor longitudinal arch, developed at that point. Or cerfices got larger because we had higher forces going from walk to running. Our achilles tending got longer in order to store the energy. But those changes occurred probably not just simply for running, but they certainly optimized us for running.
