The mind naturally asks, why do these things exist when they don't have to? And it takes some philosophical kind of gymnastics in order to get to a point where you say well, that's a silly question. The claim that what it is to be a contingent being is independent of whether something began to exist or how long it exists is quite important in Aquinas' overall project of proving the existence of God.
