George Gamow and Ralph Alfer played an important role in understanding how nuclei were forged in the hot Big Bang. Vera Rubin's work was central to us figuring out that this stuff exists in our universe. I can't put my finger on why he was never awarded the Nobel, but if I had been on the committee, I would have made that argument.
